Science of Introverts vs. Extroverts at Events

“Networking is more quality and less quantity. Better to form a solid connection with one person, than a liquid bond with ten.” – Jarod Kintz

Some people walk into an event energized, while others need space to recharge. The difference is just biology.

Extroverts tend to thrive on social stimulation because dopamine rewards external engagement, while introverts are often more sensitive to that same stimulation and may need quieter recovery afterward.

Understanding how your body reacts to dopamine can make networking feel less mysterious and more manageable. It also reframes event anxiety: a racing heart does not always mean fear. Sometimes it means anticipation. The key is to recognize how you work best, so you can show up with more clarity, confidence, and purpose.

“We’re not very good at understanding what it is that we really want. We’re extremely prone to latch onto suggestions from the outside world.”
— Alain de Botton

As you build, advice will come from family, friends, investors, and mentors. It’s usually with good intentions, but their perspective is shaped by their own lives more than by understanding you. The direction you’re heading, what motivates you, and the current challenges you face create a lens that’s difficult for others to see through.

With all the pressure of building a business, you need clarity to maintain your vision and values. Revisit your goals and metrics regularly as everything and everyone around you constantly changes.
