9 For-Profit Companies That Scale Impact Alongside Revenue

Morning beehiivcommunity!
This newsletter tackles the dilemma, “How do I know what I don’t know?” with pointed predictions, practical takeaways, and curated NYC events to help founders and CFOs expand options and build resilience.

Corporations Doing Good, and Doing Well
I studied administration at Columbia’s School of Social Work and minored in the School of Business. Together, they showed me examples and tools to build organizations that are both socially impactful and financially sustainable.
However, I realized most people think you have to choose: make money OR do good.
They’re wrong.
There are incredibly successful companies that make the world better while achieving major financial goals. Costco reached $270B annually while treating workers as partners. Kickstarter has funded over 200,000 projects, raising over $7B for creative work and generating over $50M in annual revenue since starting. Patagonia has donated $140M to environmental groups since 1985, while reaching $1B in annual revenue.
This post looks at nine for-profit companies that are doing good work beyond just making money, divided into three categories: Employees as Partners, Local and Domestic Impact, and Global Mission.
This is how you can embed impact into your business model.

Expert Tips for Startups

Designing a Fractional Practice: From Pipeline to Prosperity
As more leaders pursue portfolio careers and companies seek senior talent without the cost of a full-time hire, the fractional model is reshaping modern leadership. Four experts with experience both full-time and fractional at high-growth companies shared what works in practice.
John McCarthy, a fractional CFO for 80+ VC/PE-backed startups, has worked fractionally for 18 years. He reads the room, finds his place in the culture, and builds trust with the CEO. “Mistakes happen when moving too fast. You have to meet them where they are.” John makes himself easy to hire and easy to leave. He predicts AI will accelerate adoption of fractional leaders as tasks shrink from days to hours.
George Wells, Founder & Executive Chairman of Wells Group, has grown from a solo operator to a 40-person business. When he started 20 years ago, he had to explain the concept of fractional CFOs; now, he offers clients a menu of options. “Go on a listening tour when you arrive,” he says. “Communicate up, down, and cross-functionally.” George also sets expectations early about his time and availability.
Antonia Abraham, a COO for tech companies, has worked both fractionally and full-time. She described the tradeoffs of fractional work: you may be less emotionally invested, but you can also feel less connected. Antonia emphasized verifying data before sharing perspectives. Her red flags before an engagement: “If I don’t feel heard, they don’t engage deeply, or they say ‘We don’t do it that way.’”
Jack Sinclair, a fractional CFO and former co-founder of Bolster (which matched fractional leaders and companies), enjoyed the partnership of being a full-time executive but values fractional flexibility and continuous learning. He charges an hourly rate when he’s not thinking about a client outside of the direct work. Once he starts thinking about the client in his free time, however, he knows it’s time to move to a retainer.
